Karl Andree, un cittadino britannico di 74 anni che ha vissuto in Medio Oriente negli ultimi 25 anni, è stato condannato per il possesso di alcol nel 2014, quando le autorità hanno trovato delle bottiglie di vino fatto in cas nella sua macchina.
 
In Arabia Saudita, il possesso di alcol è sanzionato severamente, poiché il Codice Legale si basa su una rigida interpretazione della legge islamica. Per la violazione della legge, Andree ha ricevuto una condanna di 12 mesi di carcere e più di 360 frustate.
 
A causa della sua fragile salute - testimoniata dal figlio Simon, che, parlando alla radio BBC4, ha detto che suo padre Karl è sopravvissuto tre volte al cancro, ma ancora soffre di asma grave – il signor Andree ha, finora, evitato la frusta. E, per fortuna, i funzionari sauditi hanno anche dichiarato in privato che la potrebbe essere presa in considerazione la possibilità della grazia.
 
Tuttavia, dopo aver scontato la sua pena,  Andree ha servito due mesi in più in una prigione saudita. Questa petizione chiede alle autorità di agire e di rilasciare immediatamente il signor Andree. Il re Salman è il destinatario di questa petizione, poiché lui ha l'autorità e l'influenza di commutare la condanna del signor Andree.

His Majesty, Salman, King of Saudi Arabia,

The case of Karl Andree, a 74-year-old pensioner from the UK, requires urgent attention.

After being convicted of possessing alcohol in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, as well as more than 360 lashes.

So far, Saudi officials have demonstrated clemency where the lashing is concerned, but Mr Andree has now spent over 14 months in a Saudi prison.

We, the undersigned, politely request that, as Mr Andree has spent more than his allotted time in prison, his sentence now be commuted to time served -- and that he be released from prison, free to go home to be with his family. Mr Andree has been punished, now the Saudi Justice System should give him his liberty.
