UPDATE: Usman Buda, a butcher, was killed Sunday 25 June in the same Sokoto State in which Deborah Samuel was murdered, on the same grounds of  “alleged blasphemy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad” during an argument with another trader in a marketplace.

The victim was reported to have made comments in support of Abdulaziz Bauchi, an Islamic scholar who is in jail for "blasphemy". Abdulaziz's crime was calling out some Islamic clerics for false teachings and the clerics had him arrested.

In a heated argument, the victim Usman Buda supported Abdulaziz’s claims of false teachings by clerics to the enragement of his audience. Although market leaders tried to save him, they could not contain the stone-wielding extremist mob. He was beaten to death by his fellow butchers that Sunday morning. See video- Graphic Content

When there are no consequences, injustice thrives.

All people of good conscience must rise up NOW and petition the government of Nigeria and its international allies to do something decisive about these stone-wielding extremists who sit as ‘accusers’, ‘judge’, ‘jury’ and ‘executioners’ of fellow human beings in Nigeria.

Take action NOW - Sign this petition to STOP the killings.

Deborah Samuel, a young Nigerian student, was stoned to death and set ablaze by her classmates over a Whatsapp message they claimed was “blasphemous”.

Her devastated family and right-thinking Nigerians have been hanging on a thread of hope for justice for over a year. However, the key murder suspects Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci were released from custody because the prosecution, with the approval of the Commissioner of Police Kaigama, has repeatedly boycotted court proceedings.

The University of Sokoto and the Nigerian Police have done very little to secure justice for Deborah. Ironically, Rhoda Jatau - a healthcare worker who condemned the killing of Deborah - has been in prison for a year (since May 20, 2022) facing blasphemy charges. Many now fear for her life.

Deborah's case is just one of thousands of tragic incidents affecting Nigeria's persecuted Christians, particularly vulnerable women and girls.

We are signing this petition to urge the UK Government to:

1. Demand that Commissioner Kaigama be relieved of his duties and position, on the grounds of condoning injustice, incompetence and lack of professionalism and humanity in the discharge of his duties as a highly placed law enforcement officer;

2. Call on the Sokoto state government to reopen the case against the killers of Deborah Samuel forthwith, and:

3. Call on the Nigerian Government to investigate and uncover other killers of Ms Deborah Samuel, and ensure that they are prosecuted in accordance with Nigerian and international laws and standards, in order to ensure that justice is done and is seen to be done.

Petition: Help deliver justice for murdered Deborah Samuel

Dear Mr Cleverly,

Deborah Samuel, a young Nigerian student, was stoned to death and set ablaze in May 2022 by her classmates over a Whatsapp message they claimed was “blasphemous”. She follows a tragically long line of girls being abused, tortured and murdered in Nigeria, a Commonwealth state which received the second most UK bilateral foreign aid in 2021.

Shockingly, Deborah's murder suspects were released from custody because the prosecution, with the approval of the Commissioner of Police Kaigama, has repeatedly boycotted court proceedings.

We are helping to pay Kaigama's salary. As taxpaying citizens of the UK, £140 million of our hard-earned money went to the Nigerian Government in 2021 and continues to do so. Please:

1. Demand that the Nigerian Government relieves Commissioner Kaigama of his duties and position, on the grounds of condoning injustice, incompetence, and a lack of professionalism and humanity in the discharge of his duties as a highly-placed law enforcement officer;

2. Call on the Sokoto State Government to reopen the case against the killers of Deborah Samuel, and:

3. Cooperate with the Government of Nigeria to investigate and uncover the other killers of Ms Deborah Samuel, ensuring that they are prosecuted in accordance with Nigerian and international laws and standards, in order to ensure that justice is done and is seen to be done.

To ignore Deborah's murder would bring a severe blow to the cause of justice around the world, particularly in the Commonwealth, as well as to the relationship of trust between UK taxpayers and the Government.

Yours sincerely,

[Ihr Name]
