Petition to: Governor of the state of Mérida in Venezuela Jehyson Guzmán
Why do this without prior consultation with the responsible authorities?
Why do this without prior consultation with the responsible authorities?
The geotextile project announced with great fanfare by Governor Jehyson Guzmán and Minister of Ecosocialism José Lorca before President Nicolás Maduro ended up being more than a research project to protect the glacier in a private business.
This is a project that lacks a scientific basis for which the previous environmental impact, feasibility and socio-cultural studies have not been prepared as established in art. 129 of the CRBV, violating the Environment, National Parks and Territorial Planning Law.
It is an unconsulted project, where the information has not been presented to the different environmental organizations that make life in our State.
It is public and notorious that by not presenting the previous studies, both the Government, the Ministry of Ecosocialism and the Prodiversa foundation that directs this project are acting illegally and without any clear objective in terms of protecting the environment.
What they don't tell you is that they intend to take more than 3 tons of "Plastic" polypropylene to the Humboldt Peak to the Sierra Nevada under the assumption of slowing down the melting of the Glacier. This approach is based on covering the rocks adjacent to the glacier in order to protect it.
Therefore, the result of this project is already known, insisting on applying the same methods and materials in the tropical Andes is clumsy, that is, we cannot experiment on what has already been tested and verified.
This is the reason why we state that flooding the Sierra Nevada with plastic will have greater environmental consequences, seriously affecting ecosystems.
Despite the writings of the national scientific community, the pronouncements made by different scientific authorities, Universities such as the UCV, Simón Bolívar, ULA, Lisandro Alvarado, Environmental Organizations, Rescue Groups, Mountaineers where it has been recommended with sufficient research not to execute this project due to the damage and environmental impact that plastic will cause in a sensitive space, both the Governor and the Minister, instead of reflecting and rectifying their personal position, proceed arrogantly, blinded by ignorance and business, to execute a project that in the light of knowledge is totally inappropriate.
It is important to say that this project has been used by the authorities as a flag to combat climate change, however, it is clear that it will not make any contribution or meet any objective; on the contrary, it does not comply with the international consensus that establishes concrete measures to combat Climate Change such as:
- CO2 reduction,
- The implementation of clean energies
- Reforestation to capture CO2, consequently we can say that this project will remain evidence of a regional government that acts with impunity and behind the people's backs.
Mr. Governor, rectify that project is inappropriate and remember that the Sierra Nevada is not your property, it belongs to all Venezuelans and natural heritage.
