MP and Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet is causing a religious freedom controversy as he tables Bill C-367.

The bill's aim? To amend our hallowed Criminal Code through the erasing Sections 319(3)(b) and 319(3.1)(b), which provides one’s religious belief as a legal defense when facing charges and accusations of committing “hate speech” crimes.

Blanchet asserts his amendment is just about maintaining social harmony and a “simple” solution to curb the “alleged abuse” of one’s personal religious beliefs to “incite hatred” against others.

In typical politician fashion, Blanchet has worded his amendment as “sensible” and “common sense” on the surface. However, this is just a facade for legislation that will criminalize your right to express your faith freely with others, especially within public spaces.

Sections 319(3)‍(b) and 319(3.1)(b) of the Criminal Code are now in peril, as they are the safeguards within the Criminal Code to protect our Charter Rights and Freedoms.

However, if we lose these sections, we lose that critical line of defense when our beliefs are slandered with the intentionally and legally questionable terms of "hate crimes" and "hate speech."

Without these crucial protections, individuals like Pastor Artur Pawlowski – who has been charged numerous times for sharing Bible passages in public – could be found guilty of hate speech since expressing one’s religious belief would no longer be a valid legal defense.

This situation doesn't just affect one high-profile religious figure – it risks everyone's right to freedom of expression.

With Trudeau's support, the bill has already passed its first reading.

This legislation could quickly breeze through the remaining readings in light of the growing tension surrounding the Gaza conflict.

If this bill sees the light of day before this Parliamentary session comes to a close, expressing your religious convictions could land you in court – defenseless and vulnerable to the whims of a system that no longer values the Charter's guarantee of religious freedom.

The term "hate crime" remains vague and undefined in Canadian law, per Peel Regional Police. And yet, it's a loaded weapon brandished against those with differing opinions.

This shift in policy could stifle Canadians' right to practice their faith freely. Virtuous individuals who believe they're enriching our well-being may find themselves staring down the barrel of criminal charges for sharing their convictions.

Simply put, this isn't justice. It's an all-out assault on our fundamental values.

Here's the plan: if we unite and support religious freedom, our MPs must pay attention. With whispers of a snap election on the horizon, they cannot risk ignoring our collective voice.

Take action now: sign the petition and demand our leaders strike down Bill C-367. Help preserve your freedom of religion, speech, and expression.

Vote “NO” to Bill C-367 at the next reading.

To Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, Leader of Opposition Pierre Poilievre, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Minister of Justice Arif Virani, Shadow Ministers of Justice Rob Moore and Frank Caputo,

I urge you to stand against Bill C-367, a direct threat to our Freedoms of Religion, Speech, and Expression.

At its core, this bill is trying to take away our right to stand up for our faith in court, Sections 319(3)(b) and 319(3.1)(b) of the Criminal Code, which is a fundamental part of our democratic society.

Bill C-367, presented by MP and Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, aims to remove critical protections from the Criminal Code.

These protections allow one to express one's religious beliefs openly for public debate and discussion of religious viewpoints.

These sections of the Criminal Code pertain to the legal defense in expressing religious beliefs or presenting arguments based on religious texts, especially when it is done in good faith.

They safeguard individuals from wrongful “hate speech” allegations when they are simply sharing their religious convictions, especially when terms like 'hate speech' and 'hate crime' are undefined in Canadian law.

If these sections are removed, Canadians will face imprisonment for publicly expressing their faith and religious beliefs.

These amendments to the Criminal Code will breach our legal rights enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Bill of Rights.

I urge you to defend Canadians’ legal right to defend themselves when seen debating and expressing religious beliefs without fear of juridical persecution.

When Bill C-367 is up for the next reading, I look forward to you and your peers voting "NO" to Bill C-367, ensuring that all Canadians are free to speak and live according to their faith.

Sincerely,
