Šerijatski zakon u Sudanu nametnut je 1983. uspostavljanjem posebnih sudova kojima će se suditi nemuslimanima, posebno kršćanima. Mnogi su građani progonjeni i osuđeni na smrt zbog svoje vjere u Krista.
Ali danas bi se situacija u Sudanu mogla konačno promijeniti!
Zahvaljujući hrabrosti ekonomista Abdalle Hamdoka, premijera vlade nacionalnog jedinstva, rođene iz pepela tridesetogodišnjeg režima Omara Hassan al-Bashira, vjerska sloboda i poštivanje ljudskih prava mogli bi postati stvarnost u Sudanu.
Većina Sudanaca izuzetno cijeni ovaj novi vjetar slobode, ali manjinski dio stanovništva povezan sa starim fundamentalističkim obrascima pokušava na sve načine spriječiti promjene.
Izuzetno je važno je da sudanska vlada konkretno osjeti našu snažnu potporu kako bi shvatila da njeni napori za zaštitu temeljnih ljudskih prava poput slobode vjeroispovijesti ne ostaju nezapaženi u očima svijeta.
Kao što je već učinila vlada Sjedinjenih Država i Izraela, i mi moramo podržati sudansku vladu u ovom procesu promjena.
Evo važnih promjena koje ova nova vlast želi uvesti:
- Ukidanje islama kao državne religije
- Ukidanje smrtne kazne za one koji promijene vjeru i napuste islam; zločin otpadništva briše se iz kaznenog zakona
- Donošenje uredbe o vjerskoj slobodi svih vjernika i vjeroispovijesti u zemlji
- Zabrana prisilne udaje i infibulacije (spolnog sakaćenja) djevojaka
- Dodjela zemljišta crkvama za izgradnju kršćanskih bogomolja
Ove važne i hrabre mjere koje je poduzela prijelazna hunta u zemlji cijene ne samo biskupi katoličke, koptske i evangeličke crkve već i američka administracija koja je posljednjih dana odlučila Sudan ukloniti s crne liste terorističkih zemalja u kojima je sprečava se vjerska sloboda.
Ali postoje mnoge skupine islamista povezanih sa starim režimom u zemlji koji na sve načine pokušavaju bojkotirati reforme i uništiti novo ozračje slobode građana i kršćanskih zajednica.
Ne dopustimo pritiscima ovih skupina da spriječe ovu epohalnu promjenu!

We, the signers of this international petition, want to express our solidarity with the actions of the Sudanese government in the area of human rights, freedom of religion and freedom of thought.
We strongly believe that freedom of expression in all its forms and respect for human rights are essential values on which to found a modern great democracy. We are sure that the path you are guiding your country down, will lead to a better future for all of the citizens in Sudan.
We know that all of these epochal changes are meeting both internal and external resistance and gaining you enemies, but we wanted to let you know that even from a distance, many people have appreciated your reforming work and are looking at your country with enormous interest.
In expressing our esteem, we ask you to continue on the path of modernisation that will undoubtedly elevate Sudan's status in the world, making her the country of reference for the entire geographical area, even more than it is already.
Sudan is frequently cited in conferences and publications as an example of the new era dawning for the autonomous development of Africa in the area of freedom and respect for fundamental human rights.
